Three rules for Whatnot giveaways that pay for themselves
Giveaways are one of the most used tools on Whatnot, and one of the easiest to get wrong. Run them badly and you pay for shipping, collect one-star reviews and fill your stream with people who never buy. Run them well and they cost very little and bring in real customers. Three rules make most of the difference.
Rule 1: keep the giveaway light
Shipping is often the biggest cost of a giveaway. A giveaway that ships as a parcel costs far more than one that fits in a letter. A 1–5 lb parcel ships at a flat $9.21, while a first-class letter can bring it down to about 78 cents (74 cents USPS postage plus a 4 cent Whatnot fee, as of March 2026).
To get letter shipping, all three of these need to be set:
- First-class letter turned on in your show settings.
- The right category on the giveaway. Sources disagree on which one is required (Stickers, or a cards category), so check in your own show settings. Get it wrong and Whatnot may charge you normal shipping.
- A 0–1 oz shipping profile.
The item has to be under one ounce and under a quarter inch thick. Stickers, gift cards and trading cards all fit.
One catch: letter mail has no real tracking. Don't send anything expensive this way.
Rule 2: give away something people want
Every giveaway winner can leave a review on your shop. A cheap, unwanted prize may end up in the bin, or worse, as a one-star review.
It is better to give away fewer, more valuable items and hype each one up, so viewers have a reason to stay. When the prize is valuable, name it: in the show title, in the thumbnail and out loud during the show. A viewer who knows what is coming is more likely to wait for it.
Rule 3: use the guaranteed giveaway
Most sellers know the Buyer Appreciation Giveaway. But it isn't buyers-only. US law requires a free way to enter, so anyone can join through the built-in entry form, including people who never buy. If a non-buyer wins, you still have to ship the prize, and you can't swap it for a worse one.
The giveaway that gets talked about less is the guaranteed one: a small extra that goes to every single buyer. Whatnot's rules allow specific, disclosed rewards that are guaranteed with a purchase, like a sticker in every order. What they don't allow is selling a chance at a prize, such as raffles, wheels or random bonus items.
The cheap stickers that earn one-star reviews as a giveaway can work well here. Design them for the people who buy from you, put one in every order, and they become something buyers show their friends.
What to do in your own shop
- Switch your giveaways to letter shipping where the item fits, and confirm the category and 0–1 oz profile are set before the show.
- Keep valuable items off letter mail, since it has no real tracking.
- Give away fewer, better prizes and name them in your title, thumbnail and on stream.
- Set up any Buyer Appreciation Giveaway before the show starts, and plan for a non-buyer winning it.
- Add a guaranteed extra to every order, make it the same for everyone, say what it is, and make sure you have enough for the whole show.
