Big on Whatnot, invisible to ChatGPT: how to fix it
You can have hundreds of thousands of followers on Whatnot and still be invisible to ChatGPT. When a future customer asks an AI "where can I buy vintage Pokémon cards?" or "who are the most reputable sports card sellers?", the answer points them to your competitors, and they never hear about you. The fix is to find out what the AI sees today, then build the sources it relies on.
Why this is a problem
Buyers do not only search inside Whatnot. Some of them ask an AI assistant who to buy from. The assistant does not look at your follower count. It answers from what it can find written about you across the web.
If nothing out there explains who you are and why you are credible, you will not come up. That holds no matter how well your shows do.
Step 1: Ask the questions your buyers ask
Open ChatGPT and Gemini. Write 20 questions a potential customer in your niche would ask. For example:
- Where can I buy vintage Pokémon cards?
- Who are the most reputable sports card sellers?
For each answer, write down:
| # | What to record | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Which shops or brands get mentioned | This is who you are competing with in AI answers |
| 2 | Which sources the AI uses to find them (Reddit, blogs, YouTube) | This is where you need to show up |
The second column matters most. It tells you where the AI is getting its picture of your niche.
Step 2: Search for your own shop
Now ask about your shop by name. Then look at the sources the AI used. Do any of them explain why you are credible or what you specialise in? If the answer is no, that is the gap to close.
Step 3: Fix the gaps
There are three things to work on:
- Your website. Publish genuinely useful expert content about your niche: how to spot fakes, how grading works, what to look for in a lot. Content that answers real buyer questions is what gets cited.
- Your story. Document your team and your progress. Who you are, how long you have been doing this, what you have sold. This gives the AI and buyers something concrete to point to.
- Mentions from others. Earn independent mentions from other publications and communities. What other people say about you counts for more than what you say about yourself.
What to do in your own shop
- Write your 20 buyer questions today and run them through ChatGPT and Gemini.
- Make a simple sheet of which shops get named and which sources get cited.
- Search for your own shop and note what the AI says, or does not say.
- Pick one source to fix first: a page on your own site, a team and history page, or a post in a community the AI already cites.
- Re-run the same questions every month to see whether you start showing up.
Do not build your presence only on Whatnot. Your next customer might not be searching for a Whatnot seller. They might be asking AI who they should buy from.
